Think about it!!!!

This semester has started out really well. We have been discussing the sustainable ethic and its implications for the future of the earth. I know sometimes these things seem so far removed from you personally so..... I want you to return to my website amoalf.com and go to notes and assignments. Find your class and scroll down until you ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT and click on it. Take the quiz you find there and post your score along with any recommendations it makes back here on the blog. In your response discuss WHY you think you think you received the score you did. Base your answer on things we have discussed in class or just ask a question that you have had.  After posting your ideas please respond to two other posts you have read with a question or comment. I am looking forward to reading your ideas.

If everyone lived like me it will be 5.8 earths and 26 acres.

I believe that we should conserve our natural resources and not base our lifestyles on materialism things. We should think about the future generations to come.

I agree with Alexus Alexander we should use less electricity. I also agree with Travis, we should reduce driving and trash.

I will try my best to eat less meat to help out the earth and pick up trash. I will not promise but I can try.

If everyone in the world lived like I do, it would take 6.6 earths to sustain them! (Also 29.6 acres)
I am ashamed to say this may be one of the highest scores I’ve seen through the comments!
On another note, I agree with Goethe because we as Americans are running through our resources and destroying our planet faster than it can rebuild itself!
I also agree with Amoalf on the topic of "Going Green"! They stated that going green is really just a lifestyle. I believe you should do your part for the environment and make educated decisions based on cold hard facts.
One person can’t do it alone, changing the planet has to be a worldwide epidemic not just a community or state wide project!

If everyone lived like me it take 5.5 planets to sustain each and everyone of us. It would also be 24'7 global acres to support our lifestyle if they lived like me what i have to do to get that to go down is to cut down on services and eat less processed food if we all would cut down on that the world would be a lil better but to be honest we need to do more to make our earth sustainable but we are to lazy to do it

kendall B said...

It would take 6 Earths to sustain us if we lived like me. To reduce this I could cut back on the amount of animal products I eat and the distance I travel on vacations. I believe if we weren't as materialist we would not need things such as bigger houses that exceed our needs.

I agree with Goethe when he said that we are given the resposibility to be stewards of the planet. We need to make people aware of the effects of flying, driving, electricity usage ect. are having on the Earth.

I also agree with Amoalf when they said that we should gradually go green. If we make a drastic change one day it won't become apart of your routine just an every now and then thing.

I also believe that God does not approve of the damage we have done to the planet. He tells us in Deuteronomy 20:19 that we should not take an ax to any tree that could provide man with food. We were meant to live off of the planet not processed meats and such.

I used 5 and a half Earth's. I need to use less individually packaged products to have less trash. That would keep our water cleaner and cause less pollution.

J Lowe
They said they eat a lot of meat which was a reason they had so many earth's. You wouldn't think that would affect the world but I guess it does.

Jakee B.
They admitted to being high maintenance. Being high maintenance does have does have a huge affect on the world. It's hard not to live a big lifestyle, but we need to realize what it affects.

Unknown said...

It takes 5.7 Earths to support our world if everyone lived like me. the main reason for this is I love to eat meat. therefore my food has to be feed, which takes up lots of space. if I shorten the amounts of meat I eat, then it would take less Earths to support us.

Unknown said...

I agree with Keke, we can sit around all day talking about making changes but we wont see any changes just talking about it. Actions are louder than words.

Unknown said...

I agree with Josh, if we all work together to conserve our natural resources then we will make them last longer in the long run.

Jesse Smith said...

Its pretty high but thats the way i live.
I agree with Goethe and Lucas because we as are running through our resources faster than it can rebuild itself.
I also agree with Amoalf on the topic of "Going Green". They stated that going green is really just a lifestyle. While many people may have adopted this lifestyle i still believe that it will not be enough. It would take way to much to rebuild the earth in a few years, it will take hundreds of slow and plausible change for the earth to heal and the people change.

Sustainability said...

Well Jesse I suppose you could say that is just the way I roll. I won't change my lifestyle but I do realize that we are running out of resources. Maybe you could help future generations make good decisions?

Unknown said...

Ok so maybe I did this whole thing wrong but it just said "44" when I was done. I seriously doubt it would take 44 Earths to sustain me, over on the side it was congratulating me for being so co-friendly! And there was nothing about how many acres I would need for my food. Did I do the wrong quiz or do I just suck at reading?

Sustainability said...

HI Luke. Your score came with a name attached to it. For instance if you have a score of 15 you are an eco novice. If you score is 51 then you are an eco ally.I do not know what the name for your score would be but 44 is pretty good actually. This quiz is different from the one that gives scores in Earth's. Jesse found the old quiz and took that one.

I seriously think I did the wrong quiz. It just showed a huge 8 on the screen with (0-25) eco-novice. I have no idea what this means, but if it means it would take 8 earths to sustain me then I believe that's pretty bad. I got this score because I never recycle outside of school and to be honest the only time I really do recycle is in this class. I guess I too have the feeling that everything will just always be there.

Unknown said...

To Crystal: I think its great that you recycle! I wish I could do it more often too. More people should be like you when it comes to our environment!

My score was a 14 (eco-novice). I think it would take 14 earth's to sustain me. This score is great that some peoples but much less than what it should be. I should recycle more often and not just what I do in school on Thursday's. I don't think I recycle as much as I should. I think people (including myself) should take care of the planet more.
To Luke: I think it's great that I recycle, i should probably take after you a little.
To Crystal: I also think I shouldn't buy things that I don't really need.

CompromisingScenes said...

My score was a twenty-eight. I'm not really sure how to interpret that number... Nonetheless, the site congratulated me and said I am an "eco-apprentice," so that must be pretty good. I don't think that I do anything too hard at home. I drive a truck with a small engine that gets great gas mileage and have a separate trash bin for recycling plastic bottles. I grow a garden in the summer time with no fertilizers or pesticides. Crystal, you have very strong opinions about these tyoes of things. Also, you have too many run-on sentences. Just saying. I feel like all of these posts are just more and more of the same thing... "I think I should recycle more." "I think we should take care of the planet." Well, anybody can point out a problem. Why is no one coming up with any solutions? Just getting by with the bare minimum required to make the grade... Anyways, I take steps to reduce my footprint, and I am always looking for new ways to be friendly to the planet on which we ALL live. I wish I could see more people stop saying they don't do enough and start commiting to actually doing something.

Goethe said...

Thank you to CompromisingScenes for finally calling out the people who post to this blog. There are hundreds and hundreds of posts with people saying "I use a lot of resources...I ought to change...I wont change 'cause it is hard."

I am pretty sure this is designed to wake people up so they realize how much their consumer lifestyle affects the planet. The produce you love to buy out of season from California farms had to be trucked all across the country on a diesel-belching monstrosity instead of coming from your own backyard or a local farmer's market.

People just don't think about the ramifications of their choices each and every time they carelessly drop their bottle in the trash instead of the recycle bin right next to it.

Just some random soapbox proclamations from your friendly neighborhood antagonist.

Unknown said...

Hello Hannah and Klaudia,
The scores you mention (14 and 8) were actually quite low, hence the name eco novice. These scores only indicate where you are now. It only takes one change to make a difference. Look at this website http://www.50waystohelp.com/. It lists many easy things you can do to make a small difference. If everyone just made one small change it could equal one huge change for the planet.

I applaud your vigilance in being an Earth gladiator by lowering your ecofootprint. I thought you might like that title. As far as why people think it is too hard to make the changes necessary to help the planet...well this same excuse is true for students school. Do you suppose this is an innate trait in humans or something they are taught? For many people helping the planet will only come when they are forced to and some will fight that to the death in their little well armed compounds.... where they do not recognize any horrible government and their rules. To CompromisingScenes' question I'd seriously encourage people like Klaudia and Hannah to start doing things like recycle outside of class and at home, turn off lights, unplug electronics you're not using, and maybe even if you're up for it go out and volunteer in some "green' movement. My church adopted the road its on with another church so every other week a few of us go out there and pick up trash. I know it sounds like the end of the world to some people but every bit counts PLUS the road doesn't look so ugly all the time :)

To Hannah: I got around the same grade you received, we should work together to come up with new idea or ways to encourage us to be more friendly to the earth.
To Hunter and Kain: It seems like having a garden would not only be good us the environment but also good for our bodies. We all can work together to plant a garden. It seems like it would be a lot of fun!

(Evan Kirby, Im in a hurry so I'll just use Mrs. Striplings Profile)I scored a 23(Eco-Novice) pretty sure that aint to good considering my family only drinks bottled products and not once have we recycled them.I would probably have a decent impact with recycling our bottles since two or three 12 packs of green teas and about six, six packs of diet mountain dews are drank weekly, so I could probably save a few fish if I recycled them but its not something me or my family was raised around. Although we do have a small garden that grows tomatoes, a little corn, potatoes, peppers and such. Other than that Im not to much of an eco-friendly person.

Sustainability said...

(Evan Kirby again)
@ Austin, keeping a garden up aint to hard of a task its quite easy really. Just plant, water and let it grow naturally. A school garden wouldnt be a bad idea, we could grow some fruits and veggies for the school cafeteria.

If everyone lived the same lifestyle as I do, it would comsume over 5 Earths. Personally, this is hard to comprehend for the reason that I do not understand how it could take up one Earth. As for change, I wish that there was easier ways to recycle at home. I believe that if it were more convenient for people to recycle, for example, the grocery store or in bins to be picked up with trash every week, people would. As for me, I believe I live as efficient as I can while maintaining my regular needs in life.

Unknown said...

To Austin,
I like the garden idea. Great way to learn how to garden later in life. And Kara, you're right. We should appreciate our planet more.

Well we wouldn't have to travle far for our food so less pollution would come from cars and a small garden wouldn't destroy the soil like the large farms that most of us get our food from

However after seeing the questions I can see how it could have been. My mom buys organic foods and I’m always the one who turns lights off when leaving the room. I also unplug my sister’s straighteners, hair dryers, and phone chargers when she forgets to. I still need to do a better job of conserving energy and help keeping the earth clean. I think everyone could try to recycle and conserve energy but, saying and actually doing it or two completely different things.

My family doesn't do much to recycle. We turn of the lights and try to conserve water, not to help the planet, but to save money. However, when we take our trash out, my mom separates the cardboard and plastic bottles. Personally, I think if people knew what they were doing to the planet they would be more motivated to recycle. Before this class, I did not care about recycling at all. Now, I do care.

If people lived like me it would take 5.79 earths to sustain their living ability. I was suprised it was so high but I realized there are many things I can change as in:reduce goods and services, walk, ride a bike, or take public transportation. To be honest some of those things I probably would not do because its easier to just eat fast food sometimes and ride in your own car. I am not saying I would not try but it most likely will not happen.

I agree with Megan on recycling more, turning the lights off when not in use, and buying more organic food because it will help the earth be more sustainable for the future.

I think the reason my score is not less is because I do not recycle no appliances. I never thought anything of it because my whole life I was raised just throw it away. But what has really helped me was I love taking things apart, figuring out what is wrong, and fixing it. Also growing a somewhat large garden has helped that too.

Megan I think that it is very good that you go back and unplug things that are not in use. It is crazy to think that I used to do that a lot and sometimes still do. For the longest time I did not know that if something was plugged in, it was still using power.

Debbie Ezell, I do work at a grocery store (Bilo) and at registers we have a recycling bin right under cashiers. However, some still choose to just throw paper away, along with other things, because it is not enforced to recycle what you can. Even as soon as you walk into Bilo (as well as right next to the doors on the outside) there is a place for plastic, paper, and trash.

Not trying to be rude, but for some people to recycle there has to be a law and someone right beside them making them do it.

To Mrs. Stripling,
Forcing people to do the right thing (Such as recycling) it could go two ways. They could take it in a positive way and help with the enviorment. People (espically big factories that dump waste) could take it in a negative way by doing a lot more to hurt the environment just beacause they are being forced to do something so they don't have to lazy.

After taking the quiz it told me that if everyone lived like I do, we would need 6.65 Earths. That is not good at ALL. I figured that since we have energy saving features in my house and we usually have energy saving habits, that my footprint would be at least 3-4 earths smaller. I stand corrected. I mean, I realize I'm not the best at being sustainable, but I didn't expect that many Earths. Also, my food and housing footprint is above the country average. I know that we have limited sources, and I admit to thinking in the past that "it's not my problem", but I need to work towards helping the environment because I sure don't want everyone on Earth living like me.

If everyone lived like me it would take 4.33 earths just to sustain us in our decomposing world. The truth is I didn't know most of the questions and had to guess, but some were right and others were wrong. I was recommended to use cleaner transport like riding a bike, or walking and adopt more energy saving habits. This world is already unsustainable to begin with, but we can change the way we look at things and come up with better ideas to protect our world for the future generation.

I was suprised that it would take 5.53 Earths and 25.7 global acres for everyone to live like me. Where I live, there isn't a recycling center nearby, but if there was, I would frequently recycle more. Also, I think it would be a good idea if we used more energy efficient appliances, use natural resources, and to take better care of the Earth. If we don't do so now, future generations won't have much clean environment to enjoy.

I agree with what Hannah Walden says about alot of people on Earth thinking pollution isn't they're problem, when the exact opposite is true. People thinking this way is a big part of the reason that many people are living unsustainable lifestyles.

D. Holmes said...

I agree with Sylas M when he says he's going to change how he does things. I think that I should also change the way I do things. I definitely do nothing for the earth and that has to change in order to live in a healthy and safe environment.

Sylas Miller said...

I agree with Hannah J when she said if we don't do anything to help or make the world better our future generation wont have a clean environment to enjoy. Our existence on Earth is nothing but divide and conquer and in history that was our motto. We took over other new worlds, abuse the land and animals, including humans, that live on it. We most times didn't know it happened or didn't care if it did. If we don't learn from history. History will repeat again and again.

D. Holmes said...

I also agree with Hannah J when she says that she was surprised how many earths it would take if everyone lived like her. That is a lot of earths that is being used when we can just recycle and do better. Another thing I agree on is the fact that I would recycle more if there was a recycle center near by. I would hurt the earth by driving to a recycle center rather than helping it, trying to recycle trash.

Sylas Miller said...

I agree with Deion Holmes when he said that the earth does deserve a whole lot better than the way we have been treating it. We pollute it with harmful gases, take away the forests so we can put concrete and skyscrapers to live in, and barely try to fix anything and let someone else deal with it. In class we discussed new ways for more sustainable by recycling more, saving or turn off electricity when we aren't using it, and use cleaner appliances for our daily uses. These are only some little things to do but, if we all do it together it can be a big difference.

I agree with Deion and Sylas about how we should change our ways to make the planet a unique world. The only thing is that people are selfish to the point where they wont listen to others, but if we get them to realize their mistakes there is a possibility of change for the planet. We must spread the word about how recycling and other saving habits could save our planet from destruction.

After taking the Ecological Footprint quiz, I was surprised to learn that if everyone on the planet lived like I do, it would take 5.51 Earths to sustain us all. It came as a little bit of a surprise honestly. Prior to this newly found knowledge, I stood on the belief that I actually was not causing our Earth to collapse. The results changed my viewpoint. With this being brought to light, I would hate to learn how the habits of other people affect the way we live, and how many earths it would take to sustain them if everyone lived like them... I agree with Hannah to a certain extent. Trust me, I know I'm no saint, and I was surprised as well at my results, but I've never been so apathetical as to say "that's not my problem." Deion, Hannah J, Hannah W, etc. all claim they were surprised by their results. Additionally, they express their ignorance regarding the effects their regular habits have had on the world. They say this newly found knowledge will inspire them as individuals to try harder, and discover new habits. However, no one is explaining exactly how they are going to do this. They all say they will start recycling more, but is that it? Is that all you’re going to do to save the planet from its utter destruction? How about inspire others to help. Tell them the consequences of their actions. Tell your friends to take the ecological footprint quiz so it changes their viewpoints too! Let everyone know that the way they are living is putting the world in a deeper peril than it already is, and that we can work to revive the nation as a whole.

I also agree with Josh. In the Bible it tells us in Deuteronomy 20:19 that we should not take an ax to any tree that could provide man with food. I also feel ashamed of my score because it is one of the highest I've seen. I also agree with him about how we are "running through our resources and destroying our planet faster than it can build itself." But when I think about that statement I think, "can the earth truly rebuild itself in some ways or are we just using all of its life and leaving it with nothing but a future that is sure to be deadly (for the earth and us)."

In response to Josh Blanton-2013

I absolutely agree with Josh that we should all work together to conserve our natural resources, because who knows when they are going to run out. Also, I agree that we should all try and live a healthier life style, not just for the earth, but for ourselves too.

Also, to reduce my housing footprint we could use sustainable cleaning products and recycled materials. Before this class, I was apathetic and didn't really care about how I was affecting the environment. Now, I see that it's my job to help the environment and I need to change some of my habits. I agree with Brandon on trying to get people to see how their lifestyle changes our planets course toward destruction rather than evolution. It will take more than one person to change the habits of others, so we should try and make a video of all the things that are harmful to our planet. The video will also have suggestions on how to change the bad habits into helpful ones and lead the people of today toward a better future.

Apparently it would take almost 7 Earths (6.90) to sustain the human race if they all lived like me... Which is less than I thought it would be. My biggest footprints are with pastureland and farmland footprint, and that's probably because we always go to supermarkets and don't really buy things that are made of recycled materials. I figured if I went back to living like I used to in Europe (recycle almost everything, ride bikes everywhere, etc...) then I could probably reduce my number to less than 2 Earths.. which still isn't great but its better lol

Unknown said...

I agree with D. Holmes a good place to start to help the earth would be recycling. I think in chesnee our abilities to recycle are limited to school. I am not a big fan of this but if it is a short distance I think I am capable of walking and it would also help me and my health. Also the quiz says I should avoid short airplane trips-take a bus or train instead. I think this will be a good idea and I would like to do this because I am kind of scared of planes. On my quiz I scored 5.12 earths and actually expected it to be higher but when I got the number, I was ashamed as well. At first I thought, well I'm better than some people.. But am I really better at all? Is it really even good news that I take up five earths and then some? Absolutely not. Taking all of this into consideration though maybe we could use our competitive personalities and put them to good use by seeing who can make a more positive effect on the earth.. Or at least solve the problems we have created.

In response to a Megan Woods, I feel like apathy should be applied in order to save the planet and ourselves. But at the same time.. There is no apathy left. Sure there are some, but when you look at the human race as a whole, all they see is one thing: money. To humans, money leads to food, to shelter, to great social standing, to bragging rights, and ultimately materialism. When and if we can actually teach people that money is certainly not useful to a dead person, we might be able to gain apathy as a societal whole.

In response to Raven, I agree that the young adamant people of our generation is the only hope that our world will turn out any different. When we look at history, we see that every generation has a problem, and sometimes they don't solve them.. And if they do, it's detrimental to either the earth or another party. If we, the young people, look deep and realize that we're not our ancestor's mishaps but rather our children's savior's, we could save them and ourselves.

I have to agree with Elijah, I do need to start recycling and changing my ways too. I agree with Brystal when she says we all need to start recycling and changing little things. This will make the earth a little better.

According to the Eco. Footprint survey, for the world to live like me, it would take 6.99 earths just to live this here lifestyleee. Thank goodness it doesn't take 7 earths or we would be in some big trouble! Even though 6.99 is a lot of earths, the survey could be true. Being in this class shows that I am hurting the earth more than I'm helping it. I plan to start recycling, cut back on electricity usage, & alllll that good jazz. So that way we can make this world a step better like we talked about in class.

In response to Renee, I agree completely. You would think you were doing better than another but in reality, we are tearing this world apart together and it's time to work together and clean the mess we made.

In response to Kelsea, I agree with her also. Taking this class does make you realize that we need to do a whole lot better than what we are doing like recycling and other positive solutions to make this world cleaner.

I had a 6.02 I think I can change my score by save more power and unpliging stuff when I am not using. It and also I could. Take the time to recycle my trash instead of just throwing it away. Kenneth Bradley

According to the Ecological Footprint test, it would take 3.58 Earths to live my lifestyle. Honestly, that number came as a shock to me while everyone else is shocked because their number is so high. Which makes no sense with the way society is today. Although, I would have assumed it would have taken more Earths to live my lifestyle.

In response to Kelsea, are you actually going to do those things to better the environment or are you just saying that for the grade?

In response to Brystal, since she also had a lower number than everyone else and still thinks she could improve her ways is great. I completely agree with her and I also am going to do so.

When I took the quiz I learned that my normal everyday life would use 7.81 Earths and 14.9 acres. Many people probably look at that and think that I could care less about the Earth. The truth is I do care about the earth but I just don't take the time to do what need to do. To be honest I don't think it really matters, if it isn't hurting me right now then why should I worry about it. I f I dried my clothes outside instead of a dryer that might help the environment.

Abby Harris said we could use more eco friendly appliances. I agree with that and we could do a better job of adapting to our environment.

I do not agree with Deion Holmes because we could be more sustainable if its not going to affect us in the end what is the point?

according to the quiz it would take 5.36 earths to support the population if everyone lived like me. This number was surprisingly high to me. I knew I wasn't the best at helping the earth but I had no idea I caused this much damage. I am definitely going to try better at helping the earth. Before this class I never paid much attention to how I affected the environment, but now I know I must do a better job. I am going to try my best to use less water and recycle.

I am responding to megan Wood. She and I both never went out of the way to help the environment before this class. Now we know we must do our best at keeping it as healthy as possible. We need to try our best to help the earth from now on and we should hold each other accountable.
I am responding to Tyler Hamilton. We are both surprised at our results. We are both also upset with ourselves. But since now we know the damage we are causing we can make a change. We can do this together.

I got a score of 5.34 Earth' on the ecofootprint quiz. I was surprised to see that if everyone lived like I do we would need almost 5 and a half earth's. This tells me I need to be more restricted with my resources. especially the unneeded resources people in America "can't" live without.

Responding to Brandon I agree with you about cutting down on energy 100%. This is a good way I could help also.

Responding to Andrea Hall. I understand cutting down on the meat we eat, but I honestly don't think I could do that. I am also sure there are many people that couldn't either.

It would take 5.5 earth's if everyone lived like me. I think that is extremely to high. Because I think I live pretty good. I save a lot of energy myself. I guess I could eat some more produced food.
I agree with BT I could eat less produced food. But I would just be soooo hard switching up my eating habits. It is easier said than done.
I agree with Myle Suber I guess I could cut back on some electricity and water. Because sometimes I keep my phone plugged in the wall when I am not even around at all. That could save a lot. And as far as water. I know I can always stop running water when I am not in the shower yet. I could turn it on when I actually get in, that might make a difference.

According to the quiz it would take 6.3 Earths to live like me. To me that number is too high and I know that I could do better. I just don't think about the little things like, unplugging electronics when I am done using them.

I agree with Dylan. The my number also came as a shock to me and I plan on doing a better job helping out the environment before it's too late.

I also agree with Cyla. I could also cut back on electricity by unplugging my cell phone charger from the wall when I'm not using it.

If everyone lived like me then we would need 8.95 earths. I think this is mostly from the electricity and the amount of money spent. if all I do is unplug my electronics whenever I'm not using them and try to spend less money on things that I don't need.

I agree with Josh Blanton if we all lived healthier then we would be able to conserve the earth for a bit longer.

to Mrs. Stripling I agree with you about if we would just walk or ride a bike then the world wouldn't be as polluted as it is.
