Think about it!!!!

This semester has started out really well. We have been discussing the sustainable ethic and its implications for the future of the earth. I know sometimes these things seem so far removed from you personally so..... I want you to return to my website amoalf.com and go to notes and assignments. Find your class and scroll down until you ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT and click on it. Take the quiz you find there and post your score along with any recommendations it makes back here on the blog. In your response discuss WHY you think you think you received the score you did. Base your answer on things we have discussed in class or just ask a question that you have had.  After posting your ideas please respond to two other posts you have read with a question or comment. I am looking forward to reading your ideas.

If everyone on earth was just like me it would take at or around 5.4 Earth's to sustain us. I was not fully aware of how oblivious I was to this subject until now. Just to support my lifestyle, I would take up about 26 acres of Earth's productive area.

If we reduced the amount of animal products we eat by half, then we would 645 million less of global acres. I personally will try to eat less animal produce this year.

I agree with Jeffrey, I think I will ride my bike and walk more to get around instead of just hopping in the car.

I also agree with Abby Harris. The idea of becoming a more sustainable person is a great one, but it is harder than it sounds.

Kekey,
You are correct when you say it is hard to be more sustainable but just one small change can make a bid difference if everyone does it!!!

It would take 3.8 earths and 17 global acres to keep up the world if everyone lived exactly like me. After reading many of these comments this is a fair amount compared to others. I would like to know how long it would take everyone to completely use up all of the resources if everyone lived exactly like I do. It's important to take care of the Earth, but I'm not going to be cliché and say "Oh, I'm going to do better." because the chances are that I will not. On a second thought the earth needs to be taken care of by everyone including myself, and I can promise to try to reduce my habit of taking advantage of the planet.

Unknown said...

Chris Cole I believe that it is not about money but about what you buy with that money and how you dispose of the waste. If it is plastic or paper it can usually be recycled.

Unknown said...

Blake Suttles I agree that God has given us animals and plants to consume for our survival and pleasure, but Adam, Eve, and all of the animals were originally vegetarian. We would not have too many animals. If we were to not raise animals specifically for food we would actually run out of animals to consume.

Goethe said...

Great points Amber. The earth was created and would have sustained us except for humankind's sin. The whole creation was cursed because of Adam and Eve's sinfulness. Of course we weren't even given the animals as food until God made the Noahic covenant after the flood (Gen 9:3). It would take up less of earth's acres if everyone was vegetarian. I just wish vegetables tasted more meaty!

Wesley Johnson
It would take 6.1 earths and 27 global acres to take care of me. Now that's a lot, if I didn't eat as much processed food as I do and try to eat locally that would save tons of land and save more food.
Amber Nix I agree with you that it is NOT all about money, if we can keep cost down that would save half the trouble.
Mrs. Stripling, I also agree that one change could change a WHOLE lot, but if we all pitch in together for one small thing each, we could make a huge change.

Unknown said...

My score was 4 earths. More than one earth is way to many. We only have one and we need to take better care of it because we to my knowledge don't have any other plausible locations.

Unknown said...

Wesley, i agree that not eating so many processed foods is a good idea. tho you still have to think that where the local food you are talking about still comes from somewhere.

Unknown said...

Amber,to be honest we are to fart into it to actually be able to fix our earth. and not everyone is going to comply with our efforts to try and save whats left. but the best we can do is try.

It took 4.3 earths and 20.2 global acres to support me. It seems likes that's okay looking at everyone else's. So I think it would be good to live like me.

It would take 6.2 earths in order for everyone to live like I do. I could change some of the things I do like throwing trash out the window. I could recycle and start caring about the earth. it takes 27.5 global acres of earth productive area to support my lifestyle.

Wesley, I agree with you trying to eat locally.
Madison, I agree that we need to stop throwing trash out the window.

Unknown said...

It would take 4.4 earths for people to live the way I live and it would take 19.4 global acres to support my lifestyle.
Keykey I agree with you about reducing the amount of animal products we eat by half I think that would help the earth a lot.
Wesley I agree that we should start eating more locally.

Anonymous said...

If everyone lived like me it would take 5.3 earths to provide all my resources. It would take 23.5 global acres to hold all my resources. If I pledged to purchase products with less packaging, that alone would reduce the amount of earths to 4.8. I will try to purchase items with recycled materials instead. If everyone lived like me it probably wouldn't be a good thing because i love meat.

Anonymous said...

Ethan Ezell i agree with you because i see everyone saying their number of earths isn't bad compared to someone else's but the fact is, we only have one earth so anything above that is too high. In reality the earth is the only planet we have to live on so why trash it??

Anonymous said...

Mrs. Stripling i agree with you saying one small change is a big change if everyone does it. if everyone has the mind set that throwing one cup out the window won't matter, then imagine how many cups would be laying on the roads trashing our earth. but if everyone thought to throw one cup in the recycling bin, that saves so many cups from polluting us.

Unknown said...

I have learned that it would take 4.7 earths to support me. However, what really got to me was the amount of carbon dioxide I would use, which was 21.7 tons. Now that sounds outrageous. What I would like to do that would possibly help our earth is setting up places to recycle, where I could just pick up items that places have recycled.
I agree with KeKe, I wasn't fully aware of the amount of poultry I ate, but now that I know I will keep that in mind.
I also agree with Wesley johnson, my number increased by a lot when I put the amount of processed food I put. What I have been learning and noticing is that if we actually ate more "natural foods". Such as; natural grown fruits and vegetables, raised chicken with out steroids, and just atleast recycling at least one product.

Unknown said...

it would take about 1.8 earths to sustain me. The biggest problem I have is that I usually purchase packaged foods. I walk everywhere, I rarely ride in a car. If I were to try for more locally grown foods, I am sure that I could further cut back my number.

Haley,
I whole-heartedly agree with your comment about people throwing trash out. If people only realized that most people think just like that, we would have a lot less litter on the roads.

Maria,
I agree that using more recycled materials would be beneficial to all of us.

I'm sure that if I start recycling, walking, and eating less meat that the number of earths will go down.

I would have to cut down on all of the meat that I eat, but it would be hard considering the fact that I work at Wendy's. I should also make sure that I turn off the ceiling fan in my room when i am sleep. I should also start recycling because I drink a lot of bottled drinks.

If everyone lived the way I need it would take 3.6 earths and 24.8 global acres of land. Things I could change and that has a big impact on the way I live is electricity. Instead of me using it on the things I want for example games systems,Phone Chargers when I ain't using them, and lambs. I should just use it on things that I need. Another thing is I eat a lot of meat and chicken and I could slow down and when I do eat it not buy it from stores like bilo. Also when I drive see if my friend want to carpool to not cause so much pollution. Last but not least I should recycle things that are recyclable like paper, plastic, etc. I believe I should think more about the earth then for myself and the things that I WANT!!! and make earth a better place.

If everyone lived me, it would take 5 earths to provide enough resources. To support my lifestyle, it would take 22.4 earths to do so. My top 3 was resources, shelter and food. I could probably learn to not make it as hot or as warm in my house to reduce that.

I could also ride with my brother to school sometimes vice versa so there wouldn't be so much gas wasted or pollution. I will be telling other students about the use of plastic bottles and how it is destroying the world slowly. I will talk about the idea that the group has about how we could stop this and help the enviroment and their health

Unknown said...

It would take 5.4 earths to have enough resources. The quiz suggests that I eat less produced food. But if we stop eating meat then the animal population might increase a little to fast. We could all start hunting our own meat and fish for our own fish meat. Also I notice I I need to recycle and reuse more of my energy instead of just wasting it. It's best to have farm produce food instead of industry produced foods to better our health and help the earth recover from the damage mankind has already cause due to the over use of our resources.

Anonymous said...

It would take 6.4 earth's to provide for me that's slot of earth and 28 global acres that's insane I would need to cut down on my meat ingestion and recycle a heck of slot more to cut down on my earth's and save it hahah

Unknown said...

My eco footprint quiz results was i had to have 5.6 earths to sustain my lifestyle if everyone lived like i did. Thats crazy. I try to help the earth as much as i can and i still have to have over 5 earths to sustain me. I still cant believe it after 24 hours after i took the test. It would take near 20 acres just for the food i consume. Expecially seeing that i eat mostly meat and it takes a lot of plant life to feed them just so i can eat them after. I think i need to limit the amount of meat i eat in my daily diet and the amount of dairy i take in. I need to be able to help this earth live longer. Even though im just one person it could still make a very tiny difference. Its still better than not making a difference to the earth at all.

Anonymous said...

It would take 4.6 earth just to suit me. In other words I need to take a step back and think to myself. "Is this how I actually need to live?" No I don't need to live like this, I need to remember I only have one earth and I have got to make the best of it. We only have one earth and we need to take care of it.

Anonymous said...

@TaylorBradley- I agree with you. I think if I stoped driving & started walking more, the earth would be in better shape.
@YuliPlacecia- I agree with the recycling part, if we recycled more then we could save the planet and the animals.

If everyone lived like I did it would take 5-6 Earths and 25 acres of land to support my lifestyle. 58% of congressional Republicans refuse to accept the science of climate change(Thinkprogress.org). Most people have this conservative way of thinking because we don't feel that one person will make a difference or we just don't want to accept the fact that we are harming our planet. If we all did small things like car-pooling or having a more organic diet we could save a lot more land and food.

Unknown said...

I agree with @Nick Keller, if we all ate less meat and dairy products and got our food from his grandpas produce stand our results may be higher.

@Trent Mayfield. I never thought to hunt for our own food but that would be better for people in rural areas, not people in crowded cities.

If everyone were to live the way i do it would take approximately 5.1 earths to sustain us all, also my lifestyle takes up 22.7 global acres of productive land. my main problems were foods, and services.

Wow Keon Mccalkum...you did some hardcore research and found an anti-conservative statistic on a super liberal blog(think progress). The founder worked for Nancy Pelosi for a while even. Never mind that at least one story by this credible organization had to be investigated and was found to have little basis in fact (according to the non political factcheck.org).

Just because a person doesn't fall down and worship at the altar of "climate change" as the all powerful deity, that doesn't mean someone won't conserve resources. As a Christian I don't mind saying I want to fulfill God's command to rule over the earth and subdue it. However I will not allow the earth to have dominion over me.

Anonymous said...

It says that it will take about 5 planets to sustain life if everyone lived the same way I did. It says that in my life, about 39% overall is just services alone. Then it says it takes about 22.3 acres to sustain my lifestyle. When it comes to mine I feel that what helped limit my footprint would be the fact that I recycle books all the time. I buy used books as much as possible and anytime I am finished with a book I recycle it or pass it on to someone else. I can not remember a single time I threw a book away. The next highest percent I had was food. That was 16%. I could possibly reduce my footprint by buying more natural products than the processed ones, and make sure my food is organic. Basically if I switched from Wal-Mart to Whole Foods I'll be good.

If everyone lived the same lifestyle as me we would need 6.3 planet earths to provide enough resources. We would also need 28.2 global acres of the Earth's productive area. How I can lower the number of my results is to stop eating meat almost seven times out of the week into eating meat three times a week. Also, I can stop going in separate cars and tag along with my family members or a friend if we are going to the same destination.

Anonymous said...

@HaleyBishop I agree with you. buying things with less plastic on them can help with reducing the number of planets we use.

Anonymous said...

You should most definitely stop eating all that meat and and ride with others because 6.3 planets for mini jasmines is A LOT!! @jasminejohnson

Anonymous said...

My footprint grade said i would need three worlds. Their is only one.
To do better for the environment i can ride my bike or long board to reduce emissions. Another way is to use less power like turn off the TV and lights when not needed.

Anonymous said...

@JasmineHartford one thing you could do would be take the bus more often.

Anonymous said...

@jasmine johnson .. i agree with riding with a friend or family member to the same destination

i used 6.2 earths and 27.6 . To reduce the amount of resources we would need i would use less services and reduce the amount of energy i use. that would make the earth safer for all living things and future living things.

Anonymous said...

I've taken the test for my footprint. If everyone lived the way I did it would take 5.5 planets. The things I used the most were food and services. I can decrease my food percentage by buying more organic foods and eat less processed food. For services I could go to those services periodically or don't go to any at all.

@Skylar Roe, I would have probably decreased my ecological footprint if I had recycled, like, at all.
@Daphney Jackson, we could both reduce our footprint by getting our electricity through renewable resources

Carissa Delarosa: I will have to use 3.4 planets to support my exuberant lifestyle. To improve it I would have to cut back on my chicken intake and I would have to reduce the the amount of energy I would use daily.

My name is Naylor Cooper, and if everyone were to live as i do it would take 6.6 planets to provide enough resources. That is a lot of planets. I could cut this down by eating more organic foods and by using public transport.

@Jasmine H. Wow, your results are not as bad as others but I understand we don't realize how much resources we use on a daily bases. It is definitely time for us to go
green and care about the planet more than what we are doing.
@Jacob - Yeah you are right we need to stop eating a lot of processed food and get more unprocessed

Anonymous said...

@justin

I totally agree with you; I have the same problem as well. I need to cut down on my daily intake of electricity an I do understand. You, and I as well, need to cut down on electricity to improve the number of planets we need to have to survive our lifestyle.

Anonymous said...

@tyler s I agree, lower electricity use could help save lots of resources.

@shelby i also agree with you. bike riding is an effective mode of transportation that cuts down on CO2 output.

@mia D

That seems like a sensible way to improve your planets. Garden to consume your own produce and recycle to improve your pollution conflict.

i got 4.5 planets enough to provide enough resources. the way i can improve on the way i can have more planets to supply enough resources is by recycling more and spending more money on stuff that are needed then are wanted

My ecological footprint said it would take 3.5 planets, if everyone lived how I do. I would take up at least 6.3 golbal hectares. My Earths would be the following: two of my earths or 37% of my footprint would be used on housing, one earth or 25% of my footprint on traveling, and the other half of the earth on shopping (9%), energy and water (8%), and food (20%). I belive that I can reduce my footprint by reducing my living space and only having things I need. Also by owning smaller vehicles because bigger cars use up more gasoline and releases more toxins in the air. Another way to help lower my footprint is by eating less meats for my meals. It will take time to make that change though because I am used to my way of living. Little by little I think I could make a difference.

Comments:
To @SkylarRoe: Processed foods maybe bad for the eviorment but are also cheaper because it takes less time, money, and work to give to the public. While organic food would be best for the environment and for your health, it is also bad for a person's wallet.

To @JasmineJohnson: It is a great idea to eat less meats during a week. Also tagging along with anyone if you all are going to the same destination is a great idea! It reduces so much pollution in our air.
