Think about it!!!!

This semester has started out really well. We have been discussing the sustainable ethic and its implications for the future of the earth. I know sometimes these things seem so far removed from you personally so..... I want you to return to my website amoalf.com and go to notes and assignments. Find your class and scroll down until you ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT and click on it. Take the quiz you find there and post your score along with any recommendations it makes back here on the blog. In your response discuss WHY you think you think you received the score you did. Base your answer on things we have discussed in class or just ask a question that you have had.  After posting your ideas please respond to two other posts you have read with a question or comment. I am looking forward to reading your ideas.
Ms. Stripling

My ecological footprint said it would take 3.75 planets if everyone lived how I do. The Earth can provide each of us with an area of land and water the size of 41 basketball courts. 41 basketball courts is 1.8 global hectares and I am using 154 basketball courts. My footprint was 32% housing, 40% traveling, 10% shopping, 14% energy and water, and 4% food. I believe that I could change the way I am now and start trying to make a difference.

Anonymous said...

@Candy Jimenez I agree with you on trying to take things little by little to make the difference because it is hard to switch from what you are used to. I also think that you saying you would try eating less meats with your meals is great!

@Mikaela Watt turning off the water when you brush your teeth is a good idea and also turning off the lights when you leave a room thats something I need to work on also

I was very surprised by my score because i thought it was going to be a much higher number. If everyone lived like I did it would take 3 planets to sustain a manageable lifestyle. It would take approximately 123 basketball courts In area for each individual as well. This comes out to be 5.4 global hectares. Most of my ecological footprint is created by housing. I could use less water and take quicker showers as well as not letting the water run in order to reduce the effect that I create. Eating less meat would also help although it would be hard. If everyone did a little at a time , it would all add up and we could began turning the Earth around and making it a better home for generations to come.

@@candy We had a similar score, I agree with all the ideas you have and owning smaller vehicles is also a very good idea. It will take time but very possible .

@mia I do believe change is possible it will just take time, you could begin by trying to lower the amount that you travel and save more water.

The earth can provide each of us with an area of land and water the size of 41 basketball courts*
The average person in the world uses an area of 55 basketball courts
I am using123basketball courts*41 basketball courts = 1.8 global hectares
my ecological footprint is 3 planets
38% Housing 17% Travel 11% Shopping 18% Energy and Water 15% Food
I can turn my lights off when I’m not in my room, so that I wouldn’t be using my house as much. I should start recycling more instead of throwing the bottles away. I have more needs in my house then I really need.

*I knew some of the things I did was the effect to some of the problems on Earth but I never knew it was that bad. I always thought about not littering and polluting the air with the gas in my car but never anything more.

Taylor Jones Comment Responses

@TaylorBradley: I agree. We should walk more and drive less. The only problem is living in the country, we don't live near anything but mostly open land. But farming is able.

@Aly: I agree, less mobility would have a huge impact on the earth because of less pollution with gas and things. Also should focus on what we eat.

@meme I believe that turning off lights would help lower my score too because housing is my largest percentage and I don't ever think about turning my lights off when I leave my room.

My score is 144 basketball courts if everyone lived the way that I do. My ecological footprint is 3.5 planets.
39% Housing 35% Travel 9% Shopping 9% Energy and Water 8% Food
I believe that if I turn off the sink while I am not using the water and I turn off my bedroom light when I am not in there it will bring my score lower.

Anonymous said...

@Mia I would like to make a difference too but I would like to become more aware of the things that I waste and make sure that it isn't wasted anymore.

If everyone lived like me it would take 5-7 planet earths to provide enough resources. It takes 25.5 global acres to support my lifestyle. Wow, that's absolutely crazy to think about. If I cut how much I eat by half it would help exponentially. Also, eating things with more environmentally friendly packaging would help a lot as well.

Unknown said...

@Austin Davis I agree, I also need to learn to leave things off, one of the questions was what do you do when you brush your teeth, I answered leave the water on the whole time.

Anonymous said...

It says it takes 3.25 earth's to support me. It said that 37% was used for housing, 26% was used for travel, 10% was used for shopping, 17% was used for energy and water, and 9% was used for food. It also said that I am using 133 basketball courts. I could help the earth if I didn't travel as much, and cut down on the housing.

I'm using 133 basketball courts. My ecological footprint is using 3.25 planets, 41% housing 31% traveling 10% shopping and 9% energy and water and food. I could carpool to and from school with a friend, I could also down size in houses to lower my housing percentages, the last thing I could do would be taking a shorter shower.

Anonymous said...

@Colin Day I agree with turning off the lights, I need to work on doing that myself.

@ Blake I would recommend carpooling with someone to help lower the amount of traveling.

The website said it would take 4 earths to support me. Some things like running the water the whole time while I brush my teeth, leaving lights and tvs on when I'm not watching I can cut down on. It takes this many Earths because honestly I don't think about cutting the water off while brush my teeth, nor do I think about turn off lights and tvs. I know that's something I definitely can improve on. I don't think I can cut back on how much meat I eat and how much I drive. I mostly eat chicken, but occasionally I'll eat steak or hamburger meet, but I don't think I could cut down on eating my meats. I normally don't eat all the food given to me, so I guess I could order a smaller plate of whatever I get. I also don't think I would be able to cut back on how much I drive because I have to drive to school everyday and I have no one to car pool with.

@Candy Jimenez I think it's great you could cut back on your meats. I don't think I could do that!

@Yesenia Trejo I agree with you about turning the water off while brushing teeth, and I could also save more water by cutting down on my shower time.

It would take 4.8 planets to live my lifestyle. I relied on services more than anything. To support my lifestyle, it would take 21.2 global acres of earths productive ares. Two things that I would do to change this score is don't depend on electricity and services so much and maybe go solar.

If everyone lived the lifestyle that I lived we would need 4.2 Planet Earths to provide enough resources. I think that I received that score because we do not recycle hardly anything except for aluminum cans, and we do not use more electricity than really necessary. Somethings that I could do to reduce my score would be to recycle more paper and plastic and try not to throw them away. Also, we could try to eat more fresh foods, then processed foods.

When I took the quiz, it said id take up about 4-5 Earths total. I tend to use lot of water and electricity! When I brush my teeth, I tend to leave the water on even when I am not using it. I also tend to forget my lights on when I leave the house. I could save a lot of electricity and water if I get off this habit. Most of my ecological footprint takes up of services. Then goods, mobility is the least percentage on my footprint. Id take up 20.4 tons of carbon dioxide total.

I, Romello DeCuir, has found that my ecological footprint said it would take up to 5 planets to have enough resources in order to live. I think that I received the score of 5 planets by the way i use my top two of services and foods which broke down at least 61% of my ecological footprints. One way I could reduce my footprints is my services such stop buying appliances such as new items in my home that does not need to be replaced. Finally, I could reduce my score is by setting aside long distance trips to get food from like local grocery store that keeps home grown food.

When I took the quiz it said that if everyone lived like me, I would need 6 earths to do so. Most of the reason I received the score was because of all the foods and services that I use daily. One way I could do to reduce my score is by eating less meat like poultry and beef because I would kill less animals that way. Another way I could reduce that score is by taking more public transportation and reducing how much miles I use in the car.

@ZacharyGray that you should use less electricity when brushing your teeth; one thing that will help is when you finish using the water while you still brushing your teeth turn off the water to save water.

My ecological footprint quiz told me many things about my way of life. If I continue on this path, I could influence someone in a negative way. If everyone lived like me, we would need 4.2 planet Earths to provide resources for our needs. 64% of the planets are taking up by services. It would take 19.7 tons of carbon dioxide to produce the energy that would be needed for everyone to live like me. This would take up 18.8 global acres. There could be many ways to reduce my ecological footprint: recycle, eat less beef, eat less processed food, and cut down on electricity.

Hi Everyone,
I have enjoyed reading your responses and I see that many of you listed some things you can do to help the environment recycling, driving less, homegrown food, being less consumerist. I am so happy to see these ideas and I was wondering what you thought about this idea of helping the planet. There are some environmentalists that think that only replacing yourself or not having children is the best thing you can do for the planet. Have Ms. Daniels post some of your responses to this so I can show your thoughts to my students when we discuss this on Thursday.
Debbie Ezell

Anonymous said...

I believe that people should be able to have however many children that they want to have.

Anonymous said...

Not having children in this world is merely impossible. @deborahstripling

Anonymous said...

yes and no. because you can train your children to be good to the environment and to recycle and to do what they are suppose to. however, some people might not teach there kids the same way.

Anonymous said...

I Cant do it. I want me A Son. :(. I Think that this is unfair and i hope that never happen. I know that it happen in China. I Feel bad that it happens . If this ever do happen i hope its a limit of 4. Just to have a stable home

Anonymous said...

I believe that only replacing yourself wont really make a change. I think that we should just limit our uses on earth and we shouldn't let that affect the amount of children we have, because either way it goes nothing is really going to change.

Anonymous said...

I personally do not agree with how some environmentalist. I think it should be a right for individuals to determine how many children they want to have. This is not the answer and I think we should focus on other alternatives t fix the planet not do the same things except have less of us doing them. Instead our population should remain and we fix ourselves and the issues we are creating.

Anonymous said...

@Deborah Stripling I think it should be controlled because if the population is getting big and outrageous, all those women need to stop having all those kids. If something happens that is out of people's control as a result of having too much kids then everyone is going to be sad. I think it should be controlled. They don't need to have all those children.

Anonymous said...

@DeborahStripling I think this idea would help but the sacrifice is too great. If not having kids would help the nature on the planet then I thiks it would do damage too the future of society, because the kids are the future.

Anonymous said...

Hello @ Deborah Stripling and everyone else,

I do agree with the overall goal or concept of populating the planet while keeping in mind its capacity in terms of how many people it can provide for. However, I do not agree that there should be a "limit". I mean, I guess those environmental can suggest the amount of children people should have to give people an idea of how many more people we can provide for on this planet, but to actively restrict someone's ability to have children is a major no-no. It should be encouraged to stay mindful of our environment and if these future children will have the resources they need before being born too, however.

Anonymous said...

Hello, Mrs. Deborah, I do not agree with those environmentalists. If you do not have any kids and only change yourself, sure the you would be stopping from having another human from harming the planet, although if you do have children, and you raise them to take care of the environment, then you will have more people on the earth that are educated to take care of the earth instead of harming it.

Anonymous said...

@DeborahStripling I feel like the ideas we all said including recycling more often, saving energy, and saving water would help out the worlds environment a lot.

@Deborah Stripling I think not having kids is not an option, because that is the whole point of life. The population should be controlled, but not with not having kids. Maybe, there should be a maximum number of kids you can have. After 2 kids, a woman should get her tubes tied. That way, the population will be controlled. One day the world is going to run out of everything, so we should make a change now.

Anonymous said...

I think that the idea of not having children wouldn't be solving the problem. Of course, if we didn't have children there may be less people to pollute the Earth. However, we could still have children and teach them what not to do and how to treat the Earth right.

Anonymous said...

I disagree because if you populate and have more kids you can teach them the ways of keeping the earth clean and populated. It will also help the world to become more better for people to live in. if we stop populating then the world will be shorter and will not exist anymore.

Anonymous said...

@DebbieEzell Mrs. Ezell I, Romello DeCuir, believe that humans should have their own choice in how many children they would like to have on this Earth. It is the responsibility of the parents to enforce the law that recycling needs to be done in order to keep the planet safe.

Anonymous said...

I strongly do not agree. If anything, having kids and teaching them the right way to live would be better for our world and the generations after us. Teaching our kids to respect the planet will give them the ability to teach someone else the same. Eventually, after generations to come, if we all teach our children to respect then our world would not only be better to live in but also healthier. Thank you for responding and giving your opinion - hannah daigle

@Deborah Stripling I think this idea is not a option, kids are not the main reason that this planet is falling apart actually kids are a good help to this planet, we recycle, pick up trash off the ground when we see it and not many kids drive.

Anonymous said...

@Deborah Ezell
Hi, after reading what you said my opinion is that its not right if this was to happen. The reason why I say this is because everyone should live their lives how they want to and if there are rules determining how many children you can have because the environment that is wrong. Why I say this is because I feel that the population does not have anything to do with the problems of the earth and the b igger the population can actually cause a lot of changes if everyone come together as a whole to make a difference in the world.

Anonymous said...

I don't agree with this aspect of environmentalist because I feel as if I can have as many children as I please because it's my right to do so. Although, it would help the planet in so many ways I just think this would be going too far.

Anonymous said...

I do not think that if you don't have children it will be the best thing for the plant because we need people on the Earth to help it out with the Carbon cycle and thing like that. Kanisha

Goethe said...

Well finally we have a discussion I can weigh in on. Limiting the number of children we can have...What a socialist thing to propose (by the aforementioned environmentalists). All we need to do is look at the failed population control policies of Communist China and we will realize what a stupendously bad idea this would be.

It would take 4.2 earths to support me . I need 18.7 acres of the earth land to support just me. I need to stop eating so much produced food and stop using so much electricity. It's hard not to eat a lot of produced food because everything nowadays is wrapped. It's also hard to not to use electricity because the world is moving to a online society. I could cut down on how much electricity I use because all I got to do is not use electronics as much. I don't know if I could cut down on produced food because if I did I would most likely lose a lot of weight, that could be unhealthy.

Amoalf I agree with you we could all start to hunt our own food with would cut the animals down and we wouldn't have to deal with produced food. I hunt anyway but just a couple of times and one deer produces a lot of meat to eat all you have to do is keep it frozen.

Anonymous said...

Based on my score 43% were dealing with services I was surprised because I figured it would be food as the highest. but to support my lifestyle it takes 20.4 global acers of Earths productive area. Also if everyone lived like me we would need 4.6 planet earths to provide enough resources.- Jayla Gist

Anonymous said...

@Brandon Haulbrooks I agree I shouldn't be eating so much processed foods and plant a garden and raise my own animals. However that requires change and lots of work and I'm to lazy for that. LOL but I do like to fish and hunt. so its easy to have fish to eat and its cheaper because I have caught it myself and cooked it my way.

Anonymous said...

My results showed that it would take 4.9 planet Earth's to support the human if everyone lived like me. It also showed that it would take 21.6 global acres to support my lifestyle. The majority of that came from land used for energy. This was what I expected because I use a lot of unnecessary electricity every day. I am also not surprised that it would take almost 5 Earths to support my life style because I am a very wasteful person. I do not think that changing how I live would make a big enough impact to change anything, therefore these results did not make me want to change anything about the way I live.

Anonymous said...

@Brandon Haulbrooks I agree with your ideas on how to cut down on how many resources you use. With that said, I do not think it is a very practical idea because it is extremely hard to cut down on things unless you are constantly thinking of ways to conserve the resources. I also do not think that if you cut down on your resources it would make a major difference anyways.

Anonymous said...

@Jayla Gist it makes sense as to why your result showed you used the electrical things the most though. We use electricity 24/7 even when we do not realize we are using it. This is probably why electrical was the highest and not food.

Anonymous said...

It takes 5.9 Earths to support my lifestyle. We would need 26.4 global acres to support my lifestyle. Food was what I used the most of, it was 43% of my ecological footprint. I'm not surprised that food what was my highest one because I already knew that I eat a lot of pre-packaged and processed foods. I'm not proud of that statistic and am currently trying to eat better.

Anonymous said...

Brandon, I can relate to eating a lot of processed food. Most of the food that is available is processed and it is hard to avoid eating it. I can always get food from my grandparent's garden and fish at my cousin's.

Anonymous said...

I can agree with Haleigh's results of using a lot of electricity, I'm surprised it wasn't higher than it was for me. But it will be almost impossible to lower our electricity use because of how much the world is using it for everyday things...we're even using it right now to read this comment.

Unknown said...

@Haleigh I totally agree with where you are coming from. we take for granted the things that we have such as electricity and this quiz really does open our eyes to how much we take for granted on a day to day basis. this is tanner by the way I couldn't sign into my account

Unknown said...

@Brandon I agree with what your saying about food consumption. we eat so much because its always been handed to us on a platter and we have never had to work for it. that's why I think our food consumption percentage is so high rather than us grow our own food and watch what we eat and cut back on the foods we don't need this percentage would drop tremendously.

Anonymous said...

It would take me 5 planets to support to provide enough resources for me to live. To support my lifestyle, it would take 22.3 global acres of the earths productive resources. I would need to stop decrease my services and stop eating to much productive food. I should also stop using to much electricity of my devices. I think the reason my score was high is from the amount of meat I put into my diet. I should stop start eating more vegetables and being more outdoors so I wont be using to much electricity.

Anonymous said...

@Haleigh I agree that no matter how much you try on changing you habits, it wouldn't be enough to make a change to the world. It is had to change your habits when you been doing it al your life but, it worth giving it a try.

Anonymous said...

@DenaWofford I agree that you agree with @Brandon. We eat until we cant eat no more and don't think on how much work was put in to it. We need to start growing our own garden and going less to the stores of groceries shopping.

Sustainability said...

Hi Romello,
My class and I just read your response and we were wondering what do you mean by services? it was a high percentage of your footprint. Does it mean technology like cell phones?
Ms. Ezell's class

Sustainability said...

This is too everyone!!!
Everyone has mentioned the meat factor for the most part. The reason meat is a problem is not because it is bad too kill animals (although that is different discussion) but that you have to grow the food to feed your food. What does that mean ecologically?
Ms. Ezell

Sustainability said...

To Everyone:
Also I mentioned the fact that lowering the number of children people have is recommended by many environmentalists. Many of you responded with I will have as many children as I want. Lets pretend that no one is trying to tell you how many children to have why is it better for the planet to lower the worlds population. Also it has been shown that the only way to lower the worlds population is to educate women why is that so?

Sustainability said...

@rolondo it is hard to break out of old habits. This is mya Dunn but it takes 4.5 planet earths to provide enough resources.

Sustainability said...

The quiz said I would take up 5.6 earths. I would take up 24.8 global acres. I could stop eating food in wrappers, stop buying clothes every week. I understand that if I start there my score would decrease.Rosey Posey

Sustainability said...

for me to survive I would need 5.1 earths. to support my lifestyle it would take me 22.8 acres of the earth. The thing I use most is electrical energy, and is what I really use the most of. What I could do to cut down on the electricity is use solar panels to make the use of energy less. I could also use my electronics like my phone less even though it would be very hard.
-Dustin Martin

Sustainability said...

@Rolando I also need to cut down on my electrical use but it would be very hard.

Sustainability said...

@Brandon I agree planting a garden would be a good way to cut down on the consumption of processed food.

Anonymous said...

My ecological footprint score was 5.2 earths. Most of of the productive are being used was energy land, and most of my footprint came from services and shelter. Our house isn't green designed and I use a lot of electricity in my daily life.

Aahall18 said...

Well considering we have to make food for our food is essential, consider yourself as an animal that only eats vegetables such as a deer, if your in a enclosed area of about 12 acres and didn't have vegetation you would die wouldn't you? The answer is yes so that means we need to quit tearing forest down for subdivisions and factories. But we still need to be considering controlling the animal populations, just like we need to control the human population, by educating the women. The women why? Only because it's there choice, if you show a women what planet earth will look like in about seventy years the women would be wowed. If you can possibly prove its from humans they may reconsider having children. Like I said the only reason to lower the human population is because if we keep increasing we will have no more room for expansion, building homes for the 6,987,000,000 people on planet earth, that's so many houses ( imagine that ). Okay and in about sixty years there will be more than that. It is not the number of people on the planet that is the issue, but the number of consumers and the scale and nature of their consumption. The earth isn't getting any bigger, but the population is and we are using all of the natural resources. I'm gonna leave this here and just let this sink in your head

Anonymous said...

Well Ms. Stripling, ecologically I guess feeding your food means more food gone just to feed one person. So if I spent a year fattening up a cow, then that means clearing land to grow food for it which takes away trees which erodes the land. Then using fertilizer would mean poop. And when it rains, pesticides would go into the groundwater. So it would be a lot to go through just to eat a cow.

Anonymous said...

Eating a lot of meat means that you would need to use up a lot of land and soil to be able to feed and make the animals such as cows healthy and fat. People would need to keep planting grass and using more and more soil to be able to supply the animals with the food that they need. Also there is the fact that you would use fertilizer to get the food to grow faster and so when it rained that fertilizer would run into the nearby watershed or into the groundwater which means it would pollute the water even more so than it already is. So ecologically it would be a problem because you're using up so much soil and plants that could be used to grow vegetables or food for several different people instead of feeding one animal to get some meat off of.

Unknown said...

It would take 6.3 earths to sustain people like me. So I think that I could reduce my footprint by buying locally grown food. My question is what would happen if everyone switched to buying organic locally grown food within 100 miles?

Unknown said...

Well considering I take up 6.3 I think you're doing pretty well.

Unknown said...

Technically its not "impossible" to get to the center of the earth...we just haven't found a way

Sustainability said...

Selena I think you have it!!!

Sustainability said...

Michael why did you mention the center of the earth?

Sustainability said...

Aaron that was a thoughful answer I do need to let that sink in.
Ms. Ezell

Unknown said...

@Deborah Stripling
Growing food to feed your food could be worse because you are having to use more recourses to feed yourself. Not only are you killing animals, but you're taking away other people's/animal's food as well. So you'd be using all the resources even faster.

And I agree with educating women. If the women are educated, they can get a job which could possibly distract them from having any kids and give them something to do. They'd be too busy if they went to school and/or had a job.

Unknown said...

The problem with meat is that when feeding the animal that you need to kill is alot because you want to fatten it up. And doing so means daily care with food water and land ... after you have to kill and there's a process to that to so it's better to not kill aniamals

Sustainability said...

I would need 4.8 earths to support my resources it takes 21.2 global acers services take up most then food, then mobility, goods and services. I can't stop so maybe I could cut down on the mobility.
And maybe I can put down food and cut down on services.

I took up a little more than three and a half earths. I think my biggest factor to having a fairly low score is that i normally buy locally grown foods and dont eat as much chipd and thing like that lime most other people. Another big factor is that i dont ever travel by bus, train, or even airplane almost every day. I guess two of the biggest contributing factors to my score being three earths is the size of my family and house and also the gas mileage i get along with not carpulling with others as often.

Sustainability said...

Not to anyone specific but I think everyone can agree to this specific comment. Doing more on your own and having more plants is helpful, like growing your own food and things like that. Also sharing would help you could also catch a ride with someone to cut back on gas and the fumes in the air. ---By: Ivy Horton----

How much meat we eat. The farmers has to keep up with the demand on meat. So they have to have a lot of cattle which makes them have to have a lot of food for the cattle.

First get education and know what you want to do in the future. Woman needs to be educated around the world to let them know they just don't have to stat at home and have kids.

Sustainability said...

if you have to feed your food then you need to feed the right food. They need healthy food to make sure you get the nutrients you need from the animal. We could decrease the amount of land used if we just ate the vegetables instead of the meat.

We also nee dot lower population and having children is on the women. When women are educated they know what to od to make sure they do not have too many kids. Men do not matter in this.
Briunna

Sustainability said...

If you had grown your own food then you would need to just feed them the old food that you waste that is the right fit for that animal. But they still would need healthy food. The reason to educate women to bring about population control is that in near future as they grow up they will make smart and not bad decisions and there life decisions will be lot more easy to understand when they need to bring a child into the world.

If there are more people like me in this world then we would need 5.3 earths per person. In order to descrease the number of earths it would take if others were like me, is to descrease the amount of electricity I use a day, and to stop making trash in the world,. I could also think about what would make the world a better place and how to make it where I use less earths. It doesn't help that my dad works in Charlotte and has to drive an hour to and from work every week day, due to this we use a great deal of gas. The size of my house and the size of my family is also a reason why I got so many earths.

It took 5.4 Planets if everyone lived like I did. One way I could fix that is if I used less electricity and ate more organic foods instead of processed and packaged food. Also another thing is that I live in a house with four people and my grandparents drive everywhere and we could use our land better such as have our own little farm and grow some of our own foods. Next we shouldn't raise animals as food because it costs more to raise then what your going to get when you actually sell it to be turned into food and another thing is we waste more land trying to grow animals when we don't get back what we put in. One reason why educating women might decrease population or keep it as it is would be that they will spend more time in school or studying things they are interested in also it will help them make more educated decisions and help them have a more successful life.

Sustainability said...

Educating women about not having more children will not work. Having more kids then two makes the population go up. The planet would have more plants on it if we don't eat meat that eats plants.
Taylor Kimbrell

Sustainability said...

I think that the population is getting bigger we need to start educating women more better by not having so many kids. I think that 2 each is fine. We should start eating less meat and more plants. It takes more money feeding what we eat when we just should eat what we grow.
