Think about it!!!!

This semester has started out really well. We have been discussing the sustainable ethic and its implications for the future of the earth. I know sometimes these things seem so far removed from you personally so..... I want you to return to my website amoalf.com and go to notes and assignments. Find your class and scroll down until you ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT and click on it. Take the quiz you find there and post your score along with any recommendations it makes back here on the blog. In your response discuss WHY you think you think you received the score you did. Base your answer on things we have discussed in class or just ask a question that you have had.  After posting your ideas please respond to two other posts you have read with a question or comment. I am looking forward to reading your ideas.

Chyeah, apparently it would take 3.5 earths if everyone lived like me. And 15.8 global acres. But I dunno what elseee you want me to say sooo... ㄱㄱ Yeeeah.

Aw dang my face messed up, wth.

Goethe said...

Mine said 5.8 earths (let's round that to 6). It also said 26 acres.

I believe that God gave us the earth to subdue and rule over (Gen 1:28). However, this does not mean we should pillage the planet but that we are given a responsibility as stewards of the planet.

But my major point is that the planet was created for us to use not the other way around (as most tree hugging liberals and secular humanists would have it.)

Goethe

I have presented the idea in class that we are stewards of the earth so in that sense we are stewards of creation.
Adam and Eve were placed in a garden, the garden of Eden, ‘to work it and take care of it’ (Genesis 2.15 In a sense we are gardeners. What does our work as ‘gardeners’ imply? Are we doing a good job?

If everyone lived like I did it would take 5.7 Earths to sustain each of us. It would also take 25.7 golbal acres of Earth's productive area to support our lifestyles. I believe that we should conserve our natural resources, be encouraged to eat healthier foods, and not base our lifestyles on a materialism based society. We should also preserve the planet for future generations and for the betterment of our generation.

If I am more careful about using products with unnecessary packaging, it would take 3.6 earths to sustain my lifestyle. For me, caring for the earth entails support of:
-programs that provide public transportation that cuts down on the use of individual vehicles;
-public policies that encourage wise land use and protection of our water supply, prevent pollution of the earth, and promote the development clean energy sources.

Goethe said...

I agree with J.Blanton. We should take care of the earth. But I can't allow Democrats like Nancy Pelosi to dictate energy policy. This lady said that we need to get away from Fossil Fuels and start using natural gas in our cars!! NATURAL GAS IS A FOSSIL FUEL, NANCY!! Get a clue.

Amoalf. For clarification. In Genesis 2:15 the woman hadn't even been created yet so it was the man who was to take care of the earth.

Then in Genesis 3 when handing down the curse the woman's punishment was painful childbirth and to be ruled by her husband (Gen 3:16). The man's punishment still had to do with the earth itself. Even the ground itself was cursed because of the man and through painful toil he was to work it (Gen 3:17-19).

That should be enough exegesis (taking meaning out of text) for now.

The point of the blog is that we live in such a way that the earth cannot sustain us if we are consuming anywhere from 3.5 to 5.8 earths. So I would say we are not doing our best job as gardeners if we are consuming the earth at these rates.

If everybody had to live in my world it would take 6.7 planet earths...that's ALOT!!!! 29.6 Global acres, 36.6 tons of carbon dioxide...Now i know that i need to conserve my resources. I could stop buying packaging and then throwing away my boxes....so yeah...turn off lights when i leave the room, turn off the water when not using it. But i think we should be more aware the way we live!!!!

Since I was just informed that my comment was not good enough for you ㄱㄱ I will comment again to give my opinions and beliefs, yay~.

As a Buddhist (omg no way), I believe that we are no better than the Earth and that it is one (of many) of our responsibilities as humans to take care of it in every way we can. Which includes what Jonathan said, but is absolutely NOT limited to that.

There's tons more we can do, but people are too lazy, selfish, or stupid to do so.

That's all I really have to say right now.

In response to amoalf and goethe, we also have to take into accountabilty that God never gave the Earth itself to mankind. We have dominion over it and are instructed to 'subdue' it, but in Gen. 9:1-2 God told Noah that he had control over every animal and living thing that lived ON Earth, but the Earth itself was to be maintained by God. Not to say that we must not worry about the Earth because God will take care of it, but to work hard, as sanctioned in Ecclesiastes, but an individual's hard work isn't going to be satisfactory to everyone on Earth, as also stated in Ecclesiastes.

margezl said...

I don't want to get too far "off-subject" and I certainly don't want to get into a religious discussion but Goethe's comment:

"Then in Genesis 3 when handing down the curse the woman's punishment was painful childbirth and to be ruled by her husband Gen 3:16)."

I'll attest to the painful childbirth but fight to the death against being "ruled by her husband."

It would take 4.8 earths to support my lifestyle and 21.3 global acres of earth. It said that I should eat less animal products, chose things that with less packaging and try to use solar panels for energy, which really isn't that likely seeing as it's not sunny enough around here and not practical for our house.

Kathryn Lilley said...

I took the quiz and was a bit surprised that my lifestyle seems to take up so many resources (507 earths). I used to telecommute daily, which saved enourmous "footprint" costs, but all of a sudden my company changed the policy so I have to drive in to work now. Public transportation is poor in LA, so not a good option. We do recycling in my town, and I've become more aware of things like reusing plastic zip bags more than once, etc. The one thing I tried recently was using more eco-friendly kitty litter (clay litter is evidently a byproduct of srip mining, so I tried to switch to pine). The cats rejected it, and let me know by "going" everyplace except in the litterbox, so that one won't work for us.
The one factor that seemed to boost my footprint score was house size. Why is that--increased use of utilities, such as heating and air conditioning? We seldom use either (because we live near the ocean in a very termperate climate), so hopefully, our footprint isn't quite as bad as our numbers might indicate.
Excellent blog and quiz, by the way! I'll be lookin to it to get new ideas for reducing energy footprint. The latest thing I've heard about is using some kind of white or non-heat absorbing roof coverings. Some new building codes are being updated to require these types of roof coverings to combat global warming.
I'll look into it and share the link if I can find it.

I took 4.5 planets. Not to good. The meat products were a big part of it and my long commute to work every day even though I carpool. There is no option for mass transit and my shortsighted management won't allow telecommuting.

Goethe said...

I am not fully convinced that telecommuting is all that beneficial anyway. I stipulate that you can cut some CO2 emissions by not driving back and forth to work. However, you are increasing electricity usage at your own home. I know my domicile has a programmable thermostat. When I am not there, it is set to electricity saving mode. However, if I were working from home I would need lights on and the computer running and the heating/cooling system running.

On top of all of that, I know I would be eating more if I were at home all day. Being a born and raised Yankee from the Midwest I love the processed meats and cheeses so I would be causing more animals to be raised to support me. (I love the bumper sticker that reads something to the effect "If we're not supposed to eat animals, howcome they are covered in meat?") We all know that livestock flatulence (for the high school students reading this that word means farts) adds to the methane, CH4, in the atmosphere.

I am not sure I would go so far as to say that telecommuting is a wash but I don't think it is the cure-all either.

Here is my question for the group to ponder. What kind of lifestyle would it take to only use 1.0 or fewer earths? Would I need to live on a hippy comune and live off the land growing all my food hydroponically? Would I need to sit in a circle and hold hands with the other dirty hippys and sing Kum-Bay-Yah.

Goethe

Anonymous said...

I'll have to agree with goethe about the dirty hippies but the entire enviorment will have to be destroyed before I hold hands with them and sing 'Kum-Bay-Yah.' But I do think that you would probably have to live off your land, with no electricity, kill wild game for food and clothing, and walk from one destination to the next to maintain just one earth. You and I all know that this is not going to happen so the idea of having 1 earth to sustain you sounds almost impossible. Wow who would have thought that in the 21st century we would need more than one earth to sustain one human being? Go figure.

Well, first of all, I don't think that it's very appropriate to call people "dirty" D:

Also, it's not like living using only the land is impossible. There's still Amish villages, Native tribes, etc. that do these things. The culture today is just too lazy. Of course, I'm not saying it's be a smart idea to walk all the way to Westgate or anything, I'm just saying it's not impossible~

If like me, you don't want to move to commune you can strive to live a sustainable life. I don't think radical changes in lifestyle are a sustainable thing to do, instead I suggest a systematic set of changes that may take years. I don't say I live a 100% sustainable life, but am working toward a goal.
Going green is easy, there are so many great resources about the subject. My personal favorite is "The Green Book" which has parts of its book online as well at www.readthegreenbook.com.

As I have been striving to "Go Green" I realize it is like stepping back in time without getting rid of my modern conveniences. I'm doing many things I learned as a child, like line drying my clothes, sweeping instead of vacuuming, opening the windows in the morning to catch the cool breeze, only buying what I need instead of everything that looks cool, growing some of my own food, and canning what I can't eat now.

To me "going Green" is a frame of mind. Do what fits your lifestyle and do the easy things first, it is a process and like dieting if you go to radical to soon, you are more likely to go back to bad habits. I also believe there are good, better, best choices in most things. If you aren't ready to start a home garden, then try finding a farmers market, until you locate one look for produce grown as close to home as possible and go organic when available.

Many people think "going green" is expensive, I disagree. Some changes may take an initial investment, but they usually have a short payoff time. Things like weatherstiping and insulation cost, but the energy savings will add up quickly. You may need to purchase reusable bags, but most stores give you a 5 or 10 cent credit, so you are paid back within a few months.

My top tips are make your home more energy efficient, that also means using natural light, cooling and heating.

Reduce your packaging, if you eat more fresh food you will generally reduce packaging, it's the same thing they tell dieters, shop the perimiter, that is where all the meat, dairy and produce are located. Only buy what you will use, many Americans throw away a lot of unused food. Buy in bulk, that doesn't just mean large packages, but that area with the bins that you buy only what you plan on using.

Replace disposable items with durable items, if you eat outside often and use disposable paper or plastic plates, it is a wise investment to purchase a set of reusable plastic plates. Replace disposable razors, diapers and cleaning products like swiffer. Avoid bottled water, get a home filter like Pur or Brita.

Recycle, www.earth911.org will help you locate the nearest recycle center. I try to only purchase plastics that are #1 or #2, they are more easily recycled. I also buy recycled products when available, that includes paper towels, napkings, toilet paper, tissue, school/office supplies and clothing.

Detox your cleaning, vinegar and baking soda clean almost anything, they can even losen a hair clog. Seventh Generation and Method are a couple mainstream brands that are very earth friendly.

Just start small and build from there, don't get overwhelmed.

If everybody lived like me, it would take 4.8 planet earths to sustain human beings. I didn't realize I was so wasteful. My biggest problem was energy usage. We keep it cold in my house. We probably keep it colder than it actually needs to be. We also leave lights on and ceiling fans when we may not even be in the room. Everything else I was pretty good on. I just think everybody needs to try to cut back on things they don't need as much as they can, don't be so materialistic, and EAT HEALTHIER!!!

It told me it would take 3.2 Earths if everyone lived like me. Well i beleive this is true that i do not live correctly like i should to help take care of the earth, But since we are in america and do not see this being forced to change anytime soon or made to be easily changed i do not see this number droping for me anytime soon.

Now i would love to change the way i live to support the earth more for i am part native american and actually was rasied to take more care of the earth, but as the economy in america drops more and more it makes it way to hard for me and the people i live with to change this. Now i could recycle more. The first time i get a chance to change something that would dramatically reduce the way i am killing the earth i will take it but, it must be in a money easy way.

ok it took 3.7 earths to live my personal lifestyle... the reason my lifestyle is so bad is because i drove over 20 mins just to get to school and back from my house and i have to take my boyfriend to work and back which is another 20 mins then work back and forth is another 20 mins i drive way too much which of course pollutes the earth. food wasn't too bad i rarely ever eat beef but mostly chicken.. although i eat more foods that are shipped from other countries to the US. so all and all i just as everyone else could work alot better to help save the world.

If everyone lived like i do it would take 5.7 earths and 25.1 global acres to support my life style. If every american lived this way we could reduce the amount of earths and acres if pledged to reduce the amount of animal products we use and either purchase less products that has to be packaged or buy products that is packaged in recycled material. I believe that even though god did give us this planet to do as we please we still need to help keep this planet clean and make sure it can still sustain life after we die. If we keep cutting down the trees and using all of the resources up as fast as we do this planet will be unable to support life for much longer.

Sadly, my ecological footprint says it would take 6 Earths and 26.5 global acres to support my lifestyle if everyone lived it. We also create 291 tons of C02. The big difference is made in my footprint because we drive almost 550 miles a week and pay for both the kennel and our home on the monthly bills. A big difference could be made if we tried to get solar power but because of the bad economy we cannot afford it at the moment. We use EnergyStar products and recycle as much as possible, but are hoping to soon become a greener buissness and family.

It said that it would take 4.5 earths. It also said it would take 20.2 global acres to support my lifestyle.

I would have to say that I'm a typical American when it comes to my habits on treating the Earth, which probably needs to change. I do believe, though, that God made us superior mammals to everything with our adept ability to communicate, but that same ability causes war and devastation against the whole world in general, including our own kind. It is very ironic that we are suppose to be civilized people, yet we still posses such uncivilized qualities such as going to war against each other and not even picking up behind ourselves and recycling to save the very Earth we depend on for food, water, and daily activities. I will be the first to admit that I am in that sad but true category, but I am trying to change that. I believe God gave us superior qualities to provide for ourselves in an efficient manner, but to also govern and watch over the planet, not destroy everything else he created just for our personal use/gain.

But as far as seeing how everything went, there are a number of things that i could change even if its just to recycle my paper! Overall though i mean the quiz was good it'll make u think more when u go to eat something and what u do with ur trash and remains and what not, whether you throw it away or recycle it and solar power i mean you really think about it would b a lot cheaper than electricity in the long run and help promote the earth as well!

I think we should all use things differently in order to help save the planet, like using more energy efficient lights and appliances, but sometimes some people take drastic measures to do to much. I recycle all my old magazines and cans and what not, but i ain't going to dig through the trash for one little piece of something that could be recycled. In all i could do a little more to help the earth but i don't really feel like changing my habits.

After taking the quiz I learned that it would take 5.3 planet Earths to provide enough resources for my current lifestyle. I also learned that it would take 23.5 global acres which is 24.4 tons of carbon dioxide to provide enough resources for my current lifestyle. Taking this quiz and reviewing some facts showed me that just small changes in my everyday lifesytyle can make a big change in the environment. If everyone could just make little changes in their lifestyle we could cut back on may over used resources. Just by doing these few small changes I can cut my resource usage to 3.9 planet Earths from 5.3. By using 100% recycled materials or products with less packaging, by dedicating 1 trip per year at home instead of traveling, by cutting the amount of animal products I use daily, by using solar panels in my home, and by updating appliances in my home to those that are more energy efficient.

But I could try to buy more meat products that use less packaging and by starting to recycle.

But I believe that God gave us this earth for us to use but i also believe that we should take better care of it for future generations. Guess thats it because all this talkin about meat has got me hungry! So peace, punch, captain crunch!!!

Okay okay okay. . .
Apparently, it would take 4 earths if everyone were to support my living habits and it would take 18 global acres.
It's funny because this is an extremely touchy subject that can very easily go either way.

On one hand, we should recycle. We should focus on the sustainable ethic: preserve the resources we have left, and reuse and recycle the resources we have already used. We should save our planet by limiting usage and reusing all that we can. Which also means. . less landfills.

Sounds perfect. . .until manufacturers realize that it is more expensive to use recycled packaging and other materials. Now, in this totally and completely ethical and humane world that we live in, I'm sure EVERY manufacturer will agree to take a profit bite in order to "save the planet" right? yea. . didn't think so. .

While there are some advantages to recycling, there are too many disadvantages that get in the way of every day life that Americans have come to know.
Besides that, many seem to forget the pollution that recycling can actually create!
Think about everyone "going green" which means the number of trucks driving across town to pick up recycled things has doubled maybe even tripled. .thats triple the automobile emmissions! Oh no! Think about the energy consumption used to transport, sort, clean, and store the recycled goods. Think about the process of recycling, what happens to the pollutants (such as chemicals) that have to be cycled out in order for the materials to be reused.

I completely understand and agree with the intentions of "going green" but honestly I don't believe it is a reachable goal. We have lived by the Frontier Ethic since America was founded, its only escalated over time; do you honestly think it will change now? It is just too costly and the cost will effect everyone from the packagers to the manufacturers to the consumers. So who does the process begin with? Are you willing to take out the extra time and effort to support a cause that "pop culture" will only endorse on the surface? Will this idea ever really catch on? It won't take just you and me; it won't take just Chesnee. It will take the entire world, can we all work together on such a controversal cause?

The quiz said if everyone lived like me it would take 4.1 planet earths and 18.2 global acres. That wasn't as many as I thought it would be. I try to recycle but I know there is more I could do. I should try to conserve evergy at my house; like turn the tv off when no one is watching and turn the lights off when no one is in the room. I probably shouldn't drive so much but I would rather drive than ride with someone else. I think the whole "Go Green" is a good thing but I don't believe everyone really will. Even though we may not be here many years from now we should still care about the next generation.

codeh said...

Lately the earth’s capacity to tolerate exploitation and absorb solid wastes disposal has decreased, due to excess trashing. People dispose lots of stuff, and simply do not care. Therefore scientists found out a way to reuse things and that process was called "recycling". I do believe that we should recycle and that we should "go green!" But "going green" is not buying a binder at walmart with the go green symbol on it, then walking outside and throwing paper on the ground.

My quiz told me that it would take 4.5 earths and 20 global acres. Thats 19.8 tons of carbon dioxide! Wow. I have to say that im embarrased by my score. I do wish that i could be a better citizen for our country and planet because we only have one.

I think that our society is just a huge mess and i dont think God or even Obama can get us out of this one. We've brought it on ourselfs.

I also agree with what Morgan says about the manufacturers. We are surrounded by greed, and i dont really see people taking their time and money they have worked for to go buy appliances or cars to "Go Green!"

Some land of the free, and home of the brave huh?

WOW. There are some awesome comments here!! I agree that I gots to have me some meat!! You are the same people who claim "Meat is Murder" while you are wearing your leather Birkenstock sandals. If you were serious about it you would be Vegans (that is total wackos).

Morgan_Rocs, you sound a bit conflicted. Good comments though. Greedy capitalist corporations. We should be socialists so they wouldn't care about making money. Maybe once healthcare is "fixed" we will be socialists. Fixed by the guy on vacation this week in Martha's Vineyard at a $35,000.00 per week estate.

However, I most agree with M.Varner's comments. I agree we could all do a little more but nobody is going to go overboard with this thing. I paid for the product...I am gonna consume it!!

I can't say I didn't expect to get a number like that (after reading everybody else's comments that seems about average) but it really puts it in perspective about how much we affect the planet. We only have one earth and we can't afford to live like we have 3 or 4 to spare. People need to realize that we dont have infinite resources and eventually we're going to run out. I know im not one to talk but if we all would just make some little adjustments in our lives we could help reduce the harmful effects we have on the earth. All of us are guilty of leaving a light on when we leave a room or forgeting to shut the fridge door every once in a while. If everyone unplugs their cell phone chargers when they're not using them we can save millions of pounds of carbon dioxide. Even if we all commited to cutting back by half on all of the animal products we consume we'd use .3 less of the planet. It doesn't sound like alot but it just goes to show you that little things do make a difference.

okay... it says if everyone lived like me.. we'd need 7.6 earths and it would take 33.9 global acres. i never knew i used so much of earths resources..its alot easier said then done by saying you're going to recycle and do everything better and blah blah blah but i loveeeeee meat and i aint gonna stop eatin it just because this lil quiz told me i eat too much..
thats just a part of life. everyones goin to do what they wanna do.. its like goin on a diet.. u can say u want to do it all u want but u arent going to really act on it until u get fat! so are we gonna let the world get so bad that there is nothing we can do abt it? idk but i think it takes more than jus one person or one community to make such a worldwide change.. we have to impact the ppl around us and then just see where it takes us..but everything in our lives are already predetermined anyways.. so i guess its all up to God... jus live is wat i say

If everyone lived like me we would be in some trouble. it would take 5.3 planet earths to provide enough resources for my life.

To support my lifestyle it would take 23.7 global acres. That is a good bit if you really think aboout it.

I can do things in my daily life to help are earth but no one can do it alone. I think the only way to save are earth is for everyone to be committed to making changes in their life.

Me,alone making changes will not make a difference. I can make changes but i dont think we will see any improvement untill more people start changing and making an effort to save are lovely earth.

The quiz told me it'd take 7.1 earths if everyone lived liked me. It also said it'd take 31.4 global acres to support my lifestyle. Wow, i think i got one of the high numbers on here. I never realized how bad i was. I never recycle and i travel a lot. I realize maybe i should start recycling but I'd have to get my parents on board too. I think most people just don't take the time to realize exactly how much we're harming the earth, I know i hardly do. Most people go through life just worried about today and not tomorrow, or at least I do. Now i realize that's not logical thinking and most people have a lot of room for improvement in doing what's good for our planet.

Ohh Grace. Don't tell me you have fallen for that whole global warming hoax. You cannot base your whole theory on only 40 years of observations when science claims that the earth is 4.5 billion years old (another number I would disagree with but that is a topic for a different blog). That kind of science is like observing a fruit fly (life span 2 weeks) for 1/100th of a second. You can't tell much about a fruit fly when you are only observing it as long as it takes to blink an eye!!

I love the headlines in the newspaper when certain groups are trying to have Global Warming Conferences and they have to cancel the conference because of SNOWFALL!!! THAT is funny stuff!!

I totaly agree with RICKY we should be concerned about the earths wellbeing. If we are not concerned then in later years the earth will not be able to substain life. The earth might not even be able to exist itself. I could possibly reduce the pollution by cutting down on my driving. I drive more then anything. But I do carpool 3/4ths of the time so thats good.

Ok, so the quiz told me that it would take 6.3 Earths and 28.3 acres if everyone had the same lifestyle as I do. My high number of Earths did not surprise me all that much because my family does not live by the sustainable ethics like we should. We do not make a habit of turning off lights, I eat chicken for just about every meal, and we all drive SUVs. Honestly, I have never felt the need to support the so-called “Go Green” campaign. It is one of those ideas that seems perfect on the surface, but as you dig deeper, it actually creatures more controversial issues than helping solve any environmental problems. First, you have the celebrity endorsements. They advertise the campaign and clam to support recycling, reducing and reusing. This is the perfect way to get into the hearts and souls of America; until someone decides to research it and find out that the endorsers are still a major factor in this “growing problem”. Secondly, the economy comes into the picture as well. Most “Go Green” supporters not only live by recycling and reusing, they try to make reducing a big factor as well. AND SO IT BEGINS! I believe that for our economy to get back on its feet, reducing is the exact opposite of what we should be doing! Spending, not reducing, is what we need during this crucial time. And yes, I know this goes against sustainable ethics, but are we willing to suffer financially for a cause that we aren’t even sure will ever be effective?

I know that there is a set amount of time for the world’s existence, and I do not believe that a handful of people recycling will add on years to that. I commend people for following their hearts and trying to make the earth a better place, but for now, I do not see myself sacrificing my everyday routine.

I have to admit I rarely recycle probably because Im not being forced to. If everyone were to be forced to recycle like people are forced to have jobs and pay bills then maybe this world wouldn't be so bad off.

Except then everyone would be complaining about having to recycle instead of not doing it at all.

Either way there is always going to be complaints. Whether were not recycling or not recycling enough, i believe that we couldn't make the Earth better. We would of had to of started many years ago.

it would take 6.4 earths and 24.4 acres for me. that i dont really care about cause i think its a bit off the wall and you can never estimate that (too many variables, so its wrong). but one thing that makes me mad is the people that get priuses "TO SAVE THE EARTH", GUESS WHAT?! an f350 diesel will produce less toxic gases in its life span if both went to 30k, as the batteries just pollute the environment like crazy, while diesel smoke (black stuff) all just falls back to earth as carbon. thats counting the production of the vehicles also. then the diesel gains a larger lead as the miles get put on and you have to replace the batteries. plus i can tow 24500 lb, get 650 torque, 350 hp (stock), but if your getting the prius to save money, then i dont care, then you can save a bit at the pump. but if its to "SAVE THE WORLD", well then your just an ill informed, stupid jack a--!! so ill just take my diesel and ill actually have some fun on it, try doing that on your prius. apperently according to the test it would take 8.1 global hectarea to support my life style. my consumption would require a total of 9.9 football feilds. i have learned tht wht i do will affect the stuf around me. and as it says it is true. but i could be able to cut my ecological footprint by eating less meat, go shopping at at a local foot market, and dont eat so much food that can be reused.

some other ways ways i could lower my footprint is too use public transit, carpool ride a bike, or walk. i could also reduce my house energgy by turning down the thermostat when i go to sleep at night, use more energy effienct bulbs and insulaton and draft proofing.

by doing all this i am consurving the earths energy and being able to make it a better place and making our life here last a little while longer on earth.

Goethe, I believe that my lifestyle isn't that demanding on Earth's resources because all I do is sit around in my house. I rarely drive anywhere, I almost never eat meat, and I use far less electricity than anyone in my family. The majority of my score came from the fact that I generate trash, eat some processed foods, and live in a free-standing house.

I don't, "Consume, consume, consume," I simply coast through life. And to respond to your question about me teaching my kids, I'll show them what I'm doing wrong so that they may learn from my mistakes ;D

iking, i agree with you when you said that you would teach your kids to "do as i say, not as i do." i believe that's completely normal to do. That is what my parents did with me and i dont think i turned out horrible.Yes, i drive a lot of places and eat meat, but isn't this the lifestyle we have aquired as the "Amercian Way?" What are we to do afterall when it's what we are accustomed to?

MyFriendsCallMeDEBO said...

B-Weezy, the, "American Way" that you're speaking of is the Frontier Ethic and is not necessarily a good thing. Just because we are accustomed to it doesn't mean that it is right. But I'm glad that you agree with the way I plan on raising my kids. :D

B-weezy said...

To the class, I apologize for my misuse of "I". It was a common grammatical error. I must have confused this blog for Facebook. :)

iKiNG,
Yes i realize that this Frontier Ethic is not the best thing for people to do, but it's sometimes hard to give up things that we are so used to doing. In a way some people ask too much of us to give up, things that would change our way of living. For instance, not driving would cause people to have to walk great distances sometimes to get to where they need to be, which would take hours. I would, however, give up little things like meat consumption and electricity use.

Hello my fellow students!! I would like to share some facts with you about how I treat our wounderful planet.

It told me that it would take 4.2 planets if everyone lived like me. It also would take 18.8 acres. It said that I need to eat less processed food. I'm sorry planet earth but thats not going to happen, but I would try to cut down on how much electrity I use around the house.

Thanks for listening,

The quiz said it would take 6.3 earths if everyone lived like me, and it suggested i reduce the amount of meat i eat by half.I personally think that if the population is constantly growing and we are so overpopulated, then we might as well eat some of these tasty animals up so people have more room to live. Im not anti animal by any means, or am I for overpopulation but people are more important than animals. On the otherhand, myself and others could choose to share some of these delicous animals with people who are less fortunate than us.

Andrea Hall said...

IKING, You said you would do little things like using less energy, but how are you going to do that when you play video games all the time?

B-wezzy, You are right when you say that eating processed food and driving alot is the life style Americans are accustomed to. So therefore, its not our fought since we have been raised like this. It's actually the generations before us, who are supposedly so much better thans us, faught.

Anonymous, I agree with you when you said you should stop falling asleep with the t.v on and wakeing up with it still on 6 hours later. I do the same and I could see how that would use uneccesary electricity.

p.s. I find it ironic that we are being encourgaged to conserve electricty, but yet we have to get on the internet and blog about it, which uses electricty.

If you start eating all the animals then they will start to become extinct and then there will be none left for when you need it later on.

It said that it would take 6.1 Planet Earths to provide enough resources if everyone lived like I did. It takes 27.3 global acres of the Earth's productive area. It also said that if I pledged to reduce the amount of animal products i eat by half by we would use 645 million fewer global acres an acre that could cover 484 million football fields.

I agree with what J. Blanton said on Sept. 10 2008. If we consider the more healthier lifestyles for us to live instead of just worrying about the materialism then we could better the planet for future generations and for our generation as well.

B-weezy said...

Savannah, I agree with what you said about the materialism thing. Some of the materials we use, such as plastic, could be minimized so that use of materials and our planet could be changed. The more product we make and use, the more product that ends up in dumpsters at the end of the day. Many things are not biodegradable, therefore they will be on this planet longer than any human. Also, if we cut down on production of plastics and other materials, the space used for these factories could be reused into something better or more productive.<3

The quiz said it would take 4.6 planets. It also said that it would take 20.5 global acres to support my lifestyle. The most important thing I could cut down on would be energy. When I walk out of a room I can cut the life off or when its really cold cut the fan off, there are so many ways I could cut down on energy.

Unknown said...

It also said that I make 19.4 tons of carbon dioxide.

Margezl I agree with you 100% because we should cut down on transpration. Many people want to drive to school and everywhere else, why not just carpool. :)

Jennay! you didn't give much information for us to learn more about the way you live. What do you need to cut down on? What do you use the most?

Sustainability said...

I took the quiz and it said that I would use 5-4 planets based on my daily lifestyle. Some ways for me to help make a diffrence would be to cut back on the food I eat like meats and vegetables. It also said I would use 24.1 global acres so I should cut back on my vegetables since that uses all the land to grow the produce.

Dear Andrea,
I agree with you on eating meats because if people like me and you didnt eat meats then the animal population would be over popluated and that would be bad. So really we are doing the world a favor and the animals by eating meats. For example if we ate a deer then really we would be helping out the other deer friends because there would be more food, shelter and water for them and they wouldnt have to worry about starving from there being so many other deers to compete with.
-kalyn churchill :]

Dear BIG DOG,
You should consider cutting back on electricity. It really makes a huge diffrence even by just unpulgging your cell phone charger when your not using it. Or unpulgging a blowdryer. Little things can go a long way! :]

If everyone lived like me, it would take 5.9 earths to sustain our life. This was primarily because of the amount of energy that I use. I agree with most of you that this is not a very sustainable way to live, but as with most of us, I probably wont change it in the near future.

I believe that I could reduce my number by doing simple things like cutting off the lights when I'm not in the room, turning the water off when I brush my teeth, and even driving a little less.

sdc864 said...

I agree 100% with iKing in teaching my kids to live a greener life than I am living right now, but since I am accustomed to the way I live, I probably won't be changing anytime soon. Plus I believe that in time, technology can help us with that. Examples would be things like cars with much better gas mileage than we have right now and factories that produce less amounts of harmful emissons.

I reckon I could just become aneorexic and walk everywhere I go. But no, I don't believe I'm going to do that.

And Bama I agree with you and Myles, i think that if there weren't so many gluttonous people on the Earth then the animals could produce enough for us to live on and eat for a while.

BT says,
It would take me 6.3 earth's to support the Brook T clan. We would take up 27.8 of the Earth's productive area. The quiz suggests that I eat less produced food. But if we stop eating meat then the animal population might increase a little to fast. We could all start hunting our own meat, but thats not me so I beleive I would help the environment in other ways.

J blanton, Sept 10th 2008, had a good idea when he said we should eat healthier. Then we would not completley stop eating meat but it would slow it down. This would cause the need for animals to decrease and that would cause the need for farm land to decrease.

After reading all of these comments I see that nobody uses just one Earth. So I see it this way, if everyone is living their lives this way we need to chill out. Yes we need to treat Earth better but like our bodies she will heal.

An Goethe needs to grow up and stop commenting on this blog. It is too late to get any extra credit.

This is kind of impossible to believe but I actually made 3.8 earths. To support my lifestyle it would take 16.9 global acres of the world’s productive area. My question is this, how can I bring this number down. I could possibly reduce my diet and hope for a better world. On the other hand if everyone had 3.8 Earths we could possibly increase our chances of preserving our environment. (Considering the fact that 3.8 is relatively low). Lets not forget that 3rd world nations live in poverty.
